The site of this project, Moosgraben is one of the few remaining near-natural forests, forming part of the Biosphere Reserve Wiener Wald. The reserve is divided into three categories. Moosgraben belongs to the strictest category concerning the commercial use of the forest – it is a core zone, one of 37 overall. The aim of the ‘Kernzone’ is to preserve nature, yet the management of the Biosphere reserve claims to go beyond preserving nature by ‘growing the primeval forest of tomorrow’1. Whether it is possible to extract Nature from human influence is something I question with this project.
